How To Replace And Upgrade Your Euro Cylinder

Replacing and upgrading your Euro cylinder lock is a relatively straightforward process that can significantly improve the security of your doors. Here's a step-by-step guide:

Tools Needed:

  • Screwdriver (usually a Phillips or flathead)
  • Replacement Euro cylinder (ensure it's the correct size)
  • Tape measure (optional, for measuring the cylinder)
  • Pen and paper (optional, for noting measurements)

Step 1: Measure Your Current Cylinder

Before purchasing a new cylinder, measure the existing one to ensure compatibility.

  1. Remove the cylinder (explained below in Step 3) and measure:

    • The total length.
    • The distance from the centre of the cam (rotating middle section) to each end.
    • For example, using the picture above if measurement A (Internal) is 40mm and measurement B (External) is 50mm. This means you will need a 40/50 euro cylinder (90mm overall)
  2. Choose a replacement cylinder with the same measurements but with upgraded security features like anti-snap, anti-bump, and anti-drill technology.

Step 2: Purchase an Upgraded Cylinder

When shopping for a new cylinder:

  • Look for British Standard BS EN 1303 certification.
  • Consider features like a high-security key profile, which makes duplication harder.
  • Ensure the cylinder is compatible with your door's lock type. If you have any question with compatibility please email photos to ben@upvc-store.com

Step 3: Remove the Old Cylinder

  1. Open the door for better access.
  2. Locate the retaining screw on the edge of the door (usually positioned level with the cylinder).
    • Unscrew this retaining screw and keep it safe.
  3. Insert the key into the cylinder and turn it slightly to align the cam.
    • The cam needs to be aligned with the body of the lock for removal.
  4. Slide the cylinder out by gently pulling on the key.
    • You may need to wiggle the key slightly while pulling.

Step 4: Install the New Cylinder

  1. Insert the key into the new cylinder and turn it slightly to align the cam.
  2. Slide the cylinder into the lock housing on the door.
    • Ensure the cam aligns properly with the lock mechanism.
  3. Secure the cylinder with the retaining screw.
    • Do not overtighten, as it may damage the cylinder.

Step 5: Test the Lock

  1. Insert the key and test locking and unlocking the door from both sides.
  2. Check that the door opens and closes smoothly.

Step 6: Enhance Security

  • If applicable, consider adding a security escutcheon around the cylinder to protect it from snapping attacks.
  • Always keep spare keys in a secure location.
